Ideal Gas Law

Highlights of Gases
·         Density is different (balloon simulation)
·         The molecules are far apart (cooling of balloon)
·         There is lots of movement (based on observations, molecules determine weight)
·         Diffusion (bumping into one another)
Ideal Gas Law                                                    Balloon
·         PV = nRT
o   (P) Pressure                       Volume ^            Pressure (decrease)
o   (V) Volume
o   (n) Moles of Gas              Volume ^            Add Molecules ^
o   (R) Gas Constant
o   (T) Temperature              Volume ^            Temp ^

PV = nRT              à           PV = R
nT = nT                                 nT

Pressure              Temp Change
P1 = P2                   P1 = P2
T1 = T2                   T1 = T2

P = 32psi
T = 90oF = 32.22oC = 305.4K
     -20oF = -28.89oC = 244.3K

32psi      =        X
305.2K        244.3K

32psi * 244.3K = 305.2K * X          à           X = 25.6psi
                305.2K    305.2K
