For the first part of the assignment, I used pH paper to evaluate the pH levels of several liquids in my home. I found the cleaning product Comet to be the strongest base with a pH of roughly 10, and lemon juice to be the most acidic with a pH of roughly 3. Surprisingly, Cranberry-Raspberry juice was at the same level as the lemon juice. I was happy to see that the tap water (city tap water) came up neutral.
Below are the results I collected through observation and rounding using the pH color identification card provided.
The second part of the assignment was to use an antacid to neutralize an acidic liquid.
1) Measure pH of cola (generic)
2) Choose antacid - Tums
3) Choose an increment of antacid to use – ¼ tsp
4) Add one increment of antacid and measure pH
5) Repeat step 5 until pH is of a balanced level
The initial pH of the generic cola was at roughly 3.
Below is a chart of the data collected.
The results showed that to neutralize generic cola, one tums would be needed.
